Vintage jewelry of the 20th century....the designer costume pieces that changed the way women of the 21st century dress. From the 1920's onward and the emergence of CHANEL, costume jewelry emerged into the spotlight and continues stronger then ever into the 21st century. The jewelry totally changed the way women could dress and re invent themselves the 20th century progressed. The costume jewelry was affordable, fun and disposable. It appealed to the very rich and the ladies who just wanted to feel special. The world traveled more and faster, and the costume jewelry was easier to wear and not feel vulnerable. The emergence also paralled the rise of the movie film and the world of the stars. Some of the best jewelry comes from the movie world or was inspired by the movies, as an example Joseff of Hollywood. Also was the emergence of a different way of dressing as led by Chanel. Women were free...hems went up...and corsets out the door. Women traveled, worked and reinvented their identity as they chose to do. The design world of clothing and emergence of names and identiy grew as the 20th century progressed, giving many of the early designers a partner and platform to present their work. All of these changes began with CHANEL, which makes her one of the most important collectibles of today. There is a huge list of names in this design community and impossible to list all. The short bio that follows are ones we are especially interested in showcasing. CHANEL...France 1883-1971. Collaborated with talented designers...she is known for her famous strings of fake pearls and for precious stones in Byzantine settings. Her collaboration with Maison Gripoix is ledgend. The use of uneven shaps in glass as stones for her jewelry are highly collectible. For Channel please review:
BOUCHER, another born into a family of European fine jewelers. Marcel was born in France 1965 and apprinticed at Cartier. He took the family business into costume and in the classical tradition. He uses exceptional rhinestone and findings. HATTIE CARNEGIE was born Henrietta Kanengeiser (1886-1950) in Vienna and came to NYC as a teenager with her family. The name was changed at that time to CARNEGIE. Her history is well worth reading....she began a small business in the 1909 period and by 1925 she had a building to East 49th St. to house her clothing and jewelry business. She designed clothes and jewelry and was connected to power houses of the period and later. Norman Norell and Pauline Trigere both began under her wings. Please read on about her style and talent as it will enhance your appreciation of her collectible jewelry. MIRIAM HASKELL, another ledgend, beginning in 1924 with a small hotel shop in NYC. By 1925 she had a business located on Fifth Ave and 36th St. The history of the firm is long and extensive. Their costume jewelry design range is very large and they worked in many materials, dependant on availability. Very collectible today. HOBE, another family in the fine jewelry business beginning in Paris in 1848. The father was recognized as one of the outstanding jewelers of Europe. His three sons followed in the profession. In the 1930's William Hobe was involved with the Ziegfeld Follies productions and moved to NYC to further the business for the family. This business and the stars, theatre people and personalities of the day all gravitated to their creations. TRIFARI, began with Gustavo Trifari, born in 1883, Naples Italy. He emigrated to NYC in 1904. The company has a long and complex history. They had outstanding designers at different periods and created a varied inventory that reflected the changing his tory of the USA from 1900 to the 1975 date when the family sold the business. Again, this is a company to read and research to help you develop a deeper understanding of their place in the history of costume designer jewelry. KENNETH LANE, a more recent star beginning his career in the 1960's. His early pieces are very collectible and the company is still in production today. He is social and aware of the needs of the women he creates for. There are so many fabulous pieces....signed and unsigned treasures. If you can purchase one book I recommend to you:
MONIES, a european company making distictive oversized jewelry with a very high fashion statement. Gerda and Nikolai are designers and their range is working in stone, wood, bone and particular seasonal color of stones. The pieces are collectible and never out of fashion. A strong statement. PATRICE, unique and evolving heirloom pieces that are handcrafted. Using European vintage glass and molds from the late nineteenth century, they are a limited design edition. They are also statement pieces that are never out of fashion. StyleAtTheDesignersGroup looks for pieces, both signed and unsigned. Those that make a statement and define a personality. We are in a time of great casualness in dress and clothes that do not have to have a designer label. A way to make a sweater, tee, jeans...is to wear a great necklace/ear/bracelet (or all three) to create a signature look. It does not have to break the bank but it does have to be SPECIAL to YOU. Vintage is a great way to make this statement and it is not one you see on your group of friends. The sophisticated woman of today is looking to differentiate herself, to not follow the pack. When you might have been a young girl did your mother ever say..."Honey...be sure you always have clean panties on, good shoes that are not run down and a nice bag". well we do not address the panties or shoes. But the BAGS... Your mother would have gone crazy with all of the varieity of the handbag world...and just as jewelry it is the fashion statement of todays generations. We cannot offer all the bags of the world BUT BIASIA of ITALY is not the most expensive of bags. But it is a very fine Italian leather (primarily) fashion bag that is part of the wonderful product of Italy. Beautiful leathers, beautiful design that is today and yet not too trendy and a price that is well under the top of the Italian market. What also makes Biasia special is the findings and trims. The buckles, straps and metal hardware which is a major look of todays fashion. ELLIOTT LUCCA makes an excellant and very affordable handbag. Leathers with novelty and handsome finish and colors and styles for today's lifestyles. Great casual bags and totes for the city life. MAXX...color, fun, and priced very affordable...changing styles... ![]() |
